> Every kitchen tool, wearable, decoration and book, with its recipe or where to find it and how to use it.

Beyond the [stations](/wiki/kitchen/stations), the kitchen adds knives and scythes, a Pail for milk and water, hats, table settings, decorations and three books. Each entry below says how to get the item and how to use it. A few come out of a Cooking Pot, Stove or Mixing Bowl instead of a crafting table, and their captions name the station.

Most of these recipes are in your recipe book from the start. The knives appear once you own a Cutting Board, the Candy Bowl once you own a Cooking Pot, and the Calendar once you own a Distiller. The Pail Helmet and Ritual Dagger never appear, so lay them out by hand.

Anything you place is a block, so you need building rights where you put it. Inside the spawn area, x and z from -200 to 200, only members can build; the market and your own land are open to you. [Region protection](/wiki/ranks/region-protection) has the borders. Most placed items stand on the floor and drop as items if the block under them goes. To pick one up, hit it three times within three seconds.

<Callout type="info">
  On Bedrock, these recipes may not show in the recipe book. Lay the items out by hand in the grid and the result appears.

## Knives

A knife cuts food on the [Cutting Board](/wiki/kitchen/stations). Every cut uses one point of durability, and Unbreaking makes a knife last longer. All knives cut the same, so a better material only means more cuts. Put the material in the top right of the grid and a stick in the bottom left.

| Knife           | Material               | Durability |
| --------------- | ---------------------- | ---------- |
| Wooden Knife    | Any planks             | 105        |
| Stone Knife     | Cobblestone            | 235        |
| Copper Knife    | Copper ingot           | 340        |
| Iron Knife      | Iron ingot             | 450        |
| Golden Knife    | Gold ingot             | 60         |
| Diamond Knife   | Diamond                | 2,810      |
| Netherite Knife | Upgraded Diamond Knife | 3,660      |
| Ritual Dagger   | Obsidian and a bone    | 1,561      |

  ingredients={[
  [null, {label: 'Any planks'}],
  ['stick', null],

  output={{label: 'Wooden Knife'}}
  caption="Wooden Knife: a plank of any kind and a stick"
/>

The cheapest knife, good for 105 cuts. Any kind of plank works.

### Stone Knife

<Recipe
  ingredients={[
  [null, 'cobblestone'],
  ['stick', null],
]}
  output={{label: 'Stone Knife'}}
  caption="Stone Knife: a cobblestone and a stick"
/>

Durability 235.

### Copper Knife

<Recipe
  ingredients={[
  [null, 'copper_ingot'],
  ['stick', null],
]}
  output={{label: 'Copper Knife'}}
  caption="Copper Knife: a copper ingot and a stick"
/>

Durability 340.

### Iron Knife

<Recipe
  ingredients={[
  [null, 'iron_ingot'],
  ['stick', null],
]}
  output={{label: 'Iron Knife'}}
  caption="Iron Knife: an iron ingot and a stick"
/>

Durability 450.

### Golden Knife

<Recipe
  ingredients={[
  [null, 'gold_ingot'],
  ['stick', null],

<Recipe
  ingredients={[
  [null, 'diamond'],
  ['stick', null],
]}
  output={{label: 'Diamond Knife'}}
  caption="Diamond Knife: a diamond and a stick"
/>

Durability 2,810. It's also the only knife you can upgrade to netherite.

### Netherite Knife

There's no crafting recipe. At a smithing table, put in a Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template, a Diamond Knife and a netherite ingot, the same way you upgrade a diamond sword. Only a Diamond Knife becomes a Netherite Knife. Durability 3,660.

### Ritual Dagger

<Recipe
  ingredients={[
  [null, 'obsidian'],
  ['bone', null],
]}
  output={{label: 'Ritual Dagger'}}
  caption="Ritual Dagger: an obsidian and a bone"
/>

The Ritual Dagger cuts on the board like any knife, with durability 1,561. Its recipe never shows in the recipe book, on Java or Bedrock. Lay it out by hand: obsidian in the top right, a bone in the bottom left.

## Scythes

A scythe harvests ripe crops nine at a time and replants them for you.

<CommandSequence>
  <Step desc="Look at a ripe crop within reach." note="wheat, carrots, potatoes, beetroots, nether wart, torchflowers, pitcher crops, melons or pumpkins" />

  <Step desc="Hold right-click." note="the scythe cuts that crop and every ripe crop in the 3 by 3 square around it, on the same level" />
</CommandSequence>

Vanilla crops go back in the ground as seedlings, and the kitchen's [new crops](/wiki/kitchen/crops-and-ingredients) in the same square drop back to a young plant. Melons and pumpkins are cut but not replanted. Fortune adds to the drops, and unripe crops are left alone.

To harvest one of the new crops on its own, right-click it with a scythe in either hand.

Each harvest uses one point of durability. A scythe is also a weapon, and it hits from up to four blocks away. To craft one, put three of the material across the top, one more on the left of the middle row, and two sticks down the right side.

| Scythe           | Material                | Durability |
| ---------------- | ----------------------- | ---------- |
| Wooden Scythe    | Any planks              | 76         |
| Stone Scythe     | Cobblestone             | 173        |
| Copper Scythe    | Copper ingots           | 247        |
| Iron Scythe      | Iron ingots             | 326        |
| Golden Scythe    | Gold ingots             | 42         |
| Diamond Scythe   | Diamonds                | 2,030      |
| Netherite Scythe | Upgraded Diamond Scythe | 2,640      |

### Wooden Scythe

<Recipe
  ingredients={[
  [{label: 'Any planks'}, {label: 'Any planks'}, {label: 'Any planks'}],

  [null, null, 'stick'],
]}
  output={{label: 'Wooden Scythe'}}
  caption="Wooden Scythe: 4 planks of any kind and 2 sticks"
/>

Durability 76. Any kind of plank works.

### Stone Scythe

<Recipe
  ingredients={[
  ['cobblestone', 'cobblestone', 'cobblestone'],
  ['cobblestone', null, 'stick'],
  [null, null, 'stick'],
]}
  output={{label: 'Stone Scythe'}}
  caption="Stone Scythe: 4 cobblestone and 2 sticks"
/>

Durability 173.

### Copper Scythe

<Recipe
  ingredients={[
  ['copper_ingot', 'copper_ingot', 'copper_ingot'],
  ['copper_ingot', null, 'stick'],
  [null, null, 'stick'],
]}
  output={{label: 'Copper Scythe'}}
  caption="Copper Scythe: 4 copper ingots and 2 sticks"
/>

Durability 247.

### Iron Scythe

<Recipe
  ingredients={[
  ['iron_ingot', 'iron_ingot', 'iron_ingot'],

/>

Durability 326.

### Golden Scythe

<Recipe
  ingredients={[
  ['gold_ingot', 'gold_ingot', 'gold_ingot'],
  ['gold_ingot', null, 'stick'],
  [null, null, 'stick'],
]}
  output={{label: 'Golden Scythe'}}
  caption="Golden Scythe: 4 gold ingots and 2 sticks"

Durability 42, the lowest of any scythe.

### Diamond Scythe

<Recipe
  ingredients={[
  ['diamond', 'diamond', 'diamond'],
  ['diamond', null, 'stick'],
  [null, null, 'stick'],
]}
  output={{label: 'Diamond Scythe'}}
  caption="Diamond Scythe: 4 diamonds and 2 sticks"
/>

Durability 2,030. It's the only scythe you can upgrade to netherite.

### Netherite Scythe

There's no crafting recipe. At a smithing table, put in a Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template, a Diamond Scythe and a netherite ingot, as you would for a diamond sword. Only a Diamond Scythe becomes a Netherite Scythe. Durability 2,640.

## Serve and store

### Pail

<Recipe
  ingredients={[
  ['copper_ingot', null, 'copper_ingot'],
  ['copper_ingot', 'bucket', 'copper_ingot'],
  ['copper_ingot', 'copper_ingot', 'copper_ingot'],
]}
  output={{label: 'Pail'}}
  caption="Pail: 7 copper ingots and a bucket"
/>

A Pail holds 32 bottles' worth of milk or water, one liquid at a time. A bucket counts as 8 bottles and a bottle counts as 1. The tooltip shows how full it is.

**Milk a cow.** Hold the Pail in either hand, look at a cow and hold right-click. Each go adds 8 bottles' worth of milk. An empty Pail becomes a **Milk Pail**.

**Use it as a tank.** Place the Pail on the floor with open space above it. Right-click it with a water bucket or milk bucket to add 8, or with a water bottle or Milk Bottle to add 1; you get the empty bucket or bottle back. Right-click with an empty bucket to take 8 out, or with a glass bottle to take 1.

Hit a placed Pail three times within three seconds and it comes back as a **Water Pail** or **Milk Pail** that keeps what it held, or as an empty Pail. You can place it again anywhere.

A Water Pail or Milk Pail counts as water or milk in the Cooking Pot, Mixing Bowl and Distiller, and each use takes one bottle's worth. When it runs dry you get the empty Pail back. A [Faucet](/wiki/kitchen/stations) above a placed Pail fills it with water.

You can also craft Milk Bottles: one milk bucket and eight glass bottles make eight.

### Plate

<Recipe
  ingredients={[
  [{label: 'Any wooden slab'}, {label: 'Any wooden slab'}],
]}
  output={{label: 'Plate'}}
  caption="Plate: two wooden slabs side by side (works in the 2x2 inventory grid too)"
/>

A Plate holds up to five items for a set table. It can rest on a bottom slab, a closed trapdoor or a carpet, and sinks down to sit on it.

* Right-click with an item to put one on the plate.
* Right-click with an empty hand, or left-click, to take off the last item.
* Sneak and right-click to clear the whole plate.

Clear the plate, then hit it three times within three seconds to pick it up.

### Candy Bowl

<Recipe
  ingredients={[
  [{label: 'Any planks'}, 'carved_pumpkin', {label: 'Any planks'}],
  [{label: 'Any planks'}, {label: 'Any planks'}, {label: 'Any planks'}],
]}
  output={{label: 'Candy Bowl'}}
  caption="Candy Bowl: 5 planks of any kind and a carved pumpkin"
/>

The Candy Bowl holds up to 64 pieces of the kitchen's candy, from [the recipes](/wiki/kitchen/recipes). Its recipe appears once you own a Cooking Pot.

* Right-click with a candy to drop it in.
* Right-click with an empty hand to take out one candy at random.
* Sneak and right-click with an empty hand to tip the whole bowl out onto the ground.

### Picnic Basket

<Recipe
  ingredients={[
  ['red_wool', 'white_wool', 'red_wool'],
  [{label: 'Bamboo'}, null, {label: 'Bamboo'}],
  [{label: 'Bamboo'}, {label: 'Bamboo'}, {label: 'Bamboo'}],
]}
  output={{label: 'Picnic Basket'}}
  caption="Picnic Basket: 2 red wool, a white wool and 5 bamboo"
/>

A Picnic Basket holds up to 256 pieces of food and keeps them when you pick it up. It can rest on a bottom slab, a closed trapdoor or a carpet.

* Right-click while holding food, in either hand, to put one in. Sneak to put in the whole stack.
* Right-click with an empty hand, or with something that isn't food, to take one out. Sneak to take a whole stack.
* With nothing to put in or take out, a right-click opens or closes the lid. Left-click also closes it.

It takes everyday food: raw and cooked beef, porkchop, chicken, mutton, rabbit, cod and salmon, bread, apples, baked potatoes, potatoes, poisonous potatoes, pumpkin pie, golden carrots, cookies, melon slices, sweet berries, beetroots, dried kelp, honey bottles, rotten flesh and spider eyes.

If the lid is open, your first hit closes it. Hit the closed basket three times within three seconds and it drops with everything inside. A placed Picnic Basket also counts as a Cornucopia for feasts.

### Cornucopia

<Recipe
  ingredients={[
  ['pumpkin', 'hay_block', 'leaf_litter'],
  ['apple', null, null],
]}
  output={{label: 'Cornucopia'}}
  caption="Cornucopia: a pumpkin, a hay bale, leaf litter and an apple, any arrangement"
/>

A Cornucopia is a centerpiece that makes a feast last longer. Eat a feast dish within 16 blocks of a placed Cornucopia or Picnic Basket and its Saturation lasts 80 minutes instead of 60. The feast dishes are listed on [the recipes page](/wiki/kitchen/recipes).

It stands on the floor and can rest on a bottom slab, a closed trapdoor or a carpet.

## Wear and wield

### Chef Hat

<Recipe
  ingredients={[
  ['white_wool', 'white_wool'],
  ['white_wool', 'white_wool'],
  ['string', 'string'],
]}
  output={{label: 'Chef Hat'}}
  caption="Chef Hat: 4 white wool and 2 string (a 2 by 3 pattern, in any two neighboring columns)"
/>

Wear the Chef Hat like a helmet. Cook it in a Cooking Pot with The Craft of Cooking to make the [Foodie Book](#foodie-book).

### Pail Helmet

<Recipe
  ingredients={[
  ['copper_ingot', 'copper_ingot', 'copper_ingot'],
  ['copper_ingot', 'bucket', 'copper_ingot'],
  ['copper_ingot', null, 'copper_ingot'],
]}
  output={{label: 'Pail Helmet'}}
  caption="Pail Helmet: 7 copper ingots and a bucket"
/>

A pail you wear on your head, for looks. While you wear it, the inside of the pail covers the edges of your screen, the way a carved pumpkin does.

Its recipe never shows in the recipe book, on Java or Bedrock. Lay it out by hand: copper ingots across the top, a copper ingot on each side of a bucket in the middle row, and a copper ingot in each bottom corner.

### Leaf Garland

<Recipe
  ingredients={[
  ['leaf_litter', 'leaf_litter', 'leaf_litter'],
  ['leaf_litter', null, 'leaf_litter'],
  ['leaf_litter', 'leaf_litter', 'leaf_litter'],
]}
  output={{label: 'Leaf Garland'}}
  caption="Leaf Garland: 8 leaf litter in a ring"
/>

A ring of leaves to wear on your head.

### Pan

<Recipe
  ingredients={[
  ['tnt'],
]}
  output={{label: 'Pan'}}
  caption="Pan, from a Stove: one TNT alone in a Stove that still has its pan"
/>

The Pan doesn't come from a crafting table. Put one TNT, and nothing else, in a [Stove](/wiki/kitchen/stations) that still has its pan. The stove bangs and smokes but breaks nothing, then throws out the Pan.

That stove is now named **Stove?**, and its pan can't go back on. Use a spare Stove if you want to keep cooking on one with a pan.

Wear the Pan on your head or swing it. A hit knocks the target back hard and rings like a bell.

### Battle Spoon

There's no recipe. About 1 in 20 vindicators, the axe-swinging illagers of raids and woodland mansions, spawns as a chef holding a Battle Spoon. A chef drops its spoon about 1 time in 5 when it dies.

The spoon is an iron axe with a spoon's look, so it chops and fights like one.

## Decorate

### Calendar

<Recipe
  ingredients={[
  ['paper', 'red_dye', {label: 'Any hanging sign'}],
]}
  output={{label: 'Calendar'}}
  caption="Calendar: paper, red dye and a hanging sign of any kind, any arrangement"
/>

The Calendar tells you the date as a year and a day, the clock that wine ages by. Its recipe appears once you own a Distiller.

Hang it on a wall with a block behind it. Right-click it to see the date above your hotbar. Hold a bottle of wine while you right-click, and it tells you how long that bottle has aged. [Wines](/wiki/kitchen/wines) explains what age does.

### Wreath

<Recipe
  ingredients={[
  [null, 'spruce_leaves', null],
  ['spruce_leaves', null, 'spruce_leaves'],
  [null, 'red_wool', null],
]}
  output={{label: 'Wreath'}}
  caption="Wreath: 4 spruce leaves and a red wool"
/>

Hang the Wreath on a wall with a block behind it, or on a closed door. On a door it stays on the door and swings with it. Hit it three times within three seconds to take it down.

### Scarecrow

<Recipe
  ingredients={[
  ['carved_pumpkin', 'armor_stand', 'hay_block'],
]}
  output={{label: 'Scarecrow'}}
  caption="Scarecrow: a carved pumpkin, an armor stand and a hay bale, any arrangement"
/>

A Scarecrow is a decoration for your fields. Place it on the floor, or on a bottom slab, closed trapdoor or carpet. Once in a long while it changes its pose.

<Callout type="warn">
  A [Hay Brain](#hay-brain) used on a placed Scarecrow turns it into a hostile mob. This works on any Scarecrow, yours or someone else's.
</Callout>

### Hay Brain

<Recipe
  ingredients={[
  ['rotten_flesh', 'rotten_flesh', 'rotten_flesh'],
  ['hay_block', null, null],
]}
  output={{label: 'Hay Brain'}}
  caption="Hay Brain, from a Mixing Bowl: 3 rotten flesh and a hay bale"
/>

The Hay Brain doesn't come from a crafting table. Put exactly three rotten flesh and one hay bale in a [Mixing Bowl](/wiki/kitchen/stations), nothing else, and mix.

<Callout type="warn">
  Right-click a placed Scarecrow with a Hay Brain and the Scarecrow comes to life as a hostile mob. The Hay Brain is used up. The Scarecrow throws pumpkins at players up to 24 blocks away and spins to hit anyone within 2 blocks, and each hit deals 7 damage, or three and a half hearts. It never despawns, so only wake it when you're ready to fight. Its attacks never break blocks.
</Callout>

Kill the Scarecrow and it always drops a **Straw Hat**, the **Scarecrow's Hymn** music disc and some experience.

### Gift Boxes

<Recipe
  ingredients={[
  ['string', {label: 'Any dye but purple'}, 'string'],
  ['paper', null, 'paper'],
  ['paper', 'paper', 'paper'],
]}
  output={{label: 'Gift Box'}}
  caption="Gift Box: 2 string, a dye, 5 paper. 15 colors: one for every dye except purple"
/>

A Gift Box wraps an item into a present. Gift Boxes don't stack.

<CommandSequence>
  <Step desc="Hold the Gift Box in your main hand and the item to give in your off hand." note="the whole off-hand stack gets wrapped" />

  <Step desc="Right-click." note="the box becomes a Gift tagged From and your name" />

  <Step desc="Place the Gift wherever you like." />

  <Step desc="Whoever right-clicks the placed Gift opens it." note="the item pops out and the Gift disappears" />
</CommandSequence>

## Books

### The Craft of Cooking

<Recipe
  ingredients={[
  ['book', 'wheat'],
]}
  output={{label: 'The Craft of Cooking'}}
  caption="The Craft of Cooking: a book and wheat, any arrangement"
/>

The Craft of Cooking is the kitchen's cookbook. Right-click it to open it. Its chapters are Staples, Drinks & Snacks, Light Dishes, Hearty Dishes, Feasts and Desserts, with a page for each recipe. Craft it first: carrying it puts the Cooking Pot, Mixing Bowl, Cutting Board and Faucet in your recipe book.

On Java, a page shows question marks until you find that ingredient or cook that dish, and a message pops up each time you unlock one. On Bedrock, the cookbook opens as a menu with a button for each chapter.

On Java you can set any of the three kitchen books on a lectern for others to read. The Take Book button in the book gives it back.

### Foodie Book

<Recipe
  ingredients={[
  [{label: 'Chef Hat'}, {label: 'The Craft of Cooking'}],
]}
  output={{label: 'Foodie Book'}}
  caption="Foodie Book, from a Cooking Pot: a Chef Hat and The Craft of Cooking (both used up)"
/>

The Foodie Book doesn't come from a crafting table. Put a Chef Hat and The Craft of Cooking in a Cooking Pot. Both are used up, so craft a new cookbook afterwards. The pages you've unlocked belong to you, not to the book.

The Foodie Book opens only on Java. It holds the recipes for the Foodie Feast and the five things that go into it: Beef Wellington, Fondant Potatoes, Vegetable Purée, Demi-glace and Fine Wine. All of them are written out on [the recipes page](/wiki/kitchen/recipes), and Fine Wine on [the wines page](/wiki/kitchen/wines), so Bedrock players can cook them too.

### Brewer's Digest

There's no recipe. The Brewer's Digest turns up in shipwrecks: the first time you open a shipwreck's map chest, the book appears in it. Finding it puts the Distiller in your recipe book.

It opens only on Java and holds the Distiller and Basin recipes, the drinks and how ageing works. Every one of those is on [the wines page](/wiki/kitchen/wines).

### Secret recipe scrolls

Some butchers, from level 1 up, may offer a secret recipe scroll for 20 emeralds and a paper. Each scroll is a random one of nine: Tattered, Explosive, Frigid, Heavenly, Roseate, Soaring, Thoughtful, Bubbling or Flaming Recipe.

A scroll is a drawn clue to one of the dishes the cookbook leaves out. It doesn't unlock anything. Every secret dish is written out on [the recipes page](/wiki/kitchen/recipes).

## Other finds

### Straw Hat

The hostile Scarecrow always drops a Straw Hat; see [Hay Brain](#hay-brain). Wear it, or cook it into a [Tortilla Sombrero](#tortilla-sombrero).

### Music discs

<Recipe
  ingredients={[
  [{label: 'Any music disc'}, {label: 'Spaghetti'}],
]}
  output={{label: 'Music Disc'}}
  caption="In Time For Dinner, from a Cooking Pot: any music disc and Spaghetti"
/>

<Recipe
  ingredients={[
  [{label: 'Any music disc'}, {label: 'Thankful Meal'}],
]}
  output={{label: 'Music Disc'}}
  caption="A Meal With Friends, from a Cooking Pot: any music disc and Thankful Meal"
/>

<Recipe
  ingredients={[
  [{label: 'Any music disc'}, {label: 'Chili Pepper'}],
]}
  output={{label: 'Music Disc'}}
  caption="Sauté, from a Cooking Pot: any music disc and a Chili Pepper"
/>

<Recipe
  ingredients={[
  [{label: 'Any music disc'}, {label: 'Festive Meal'}],
]}
  output={{label: 'Music Disc'}}
  caption="Season's Greetings, from a Cooking Pot: any music disc and Festive Meal"
/>

<Recipe
  ingredients={[
  [{label: "Scarecrow's Hymn disc"}],
]}
  output={{label: 'Music Disc'}}
  caption="Trick or Treat, from a Witch Cauldron: the Scarecrow's Hymn disc alone"
/>

The kitchen has six new songs. Four come from a Cooking Pot: put in any music disc and the dish shown, and the pot uses up both and gives you the new disc. Every new disc is named Music Disc, and the song title is in its tooltip.

The **Scarecrow's Hymn** disc comes only from the hostile Scarecrow, which always drops it; see [Hay Brain](#hay-brain). Put that disc alone in a [Witch Cauldron](/wiki/kitchen/stations) to get **Trick or Treat**. A plain Cooking Pot won't do it.

### Tortilla Sombrero

<Recipe
  ingredients={[
  [{label: 'Straw Hat'}, {label: 'Tortilla Chips'}, {label: 'Cheese'}],
]}
  output={{label: 'Tortilla Sombrero'}}
  caption="Tortilla Sombrero, from a Cooking Pot: a Straw Hat, Tortilla Chips and Cheese"
/>

Put a Straw Hat, Tortilla Chips and Cheese in a Cooking Pot for a hat you can wear.

### Spirit Sprite

Booze, the hostile mob from Booze Wine, always drops a Spirit Sprite when it dies. To meet Booze, make Booze Wine in a Distiller from an Ominous Bottle and Grapes, with no water. When it's done, right-click the Basin with a glass bottle: instead of wine, Booze appears and fights. [Wines](/wiki/kitchen/wines) has the details.

Right-click with the Spirit Sprite while you look at:

* **A Distiller in the middle of a batch.** The batch finishes at once. On an idle Distiller the sprite is wasted, so use it only while one is working.
* **A Wine Rack.** The wine in the rack ages at once, shared among the bottles, and each bottle is marked Spirited.
* **Anything else.** A harmless little sprite floats out in front of you.

Each use takes one Spirit Sprite.

### Booze Head

When a player kills Booze, it drops its head about 1 time in 10, and Looting raises the odds. Place the Booze Head as a decoration.
