End expeditions
A guide to layered End terrain, rifts, dragon bones, distant buildings, and the trip home.
The outer End rewards patience more than speed. Its islands rise into high shelves and steep cuts, with long gaps that make a distant building hard to judge. Mark the gateway where you arrived, carry more bridge blocks than you expect to use, and keep a spare pearl where you can reach it.
Across the islands
Crystal peaks and shadowlands break up the pale End stone. Some regions fall away into void barrens; others give you high ground from which to survey the next island. Older explored ground can look different from terrain first generated later, so follow the land in front of you rather than relying on a picture of someone else's route.
Two sights are worth a closer look even before you spot a city: dragon skeletons can stretch across the terrain, and rifts form their own unusual structures. Neither is a substitute for a marked way home. Cross to them with a return bridge in mind.
What you can find

Extra structures generate in unexplored areas; they are not added retroactively to islands you have already crossed. A long search may end with a view rather than a chest, so take enough food and blocks for the way back.
An End castle holds a haunting phantom boss. Its high rooms make a fall as dangerous as the fight itself. If you find a zombie villager there, curing it and trading as a novice librarian can reveal a book tied to the castle. A chart from a tavern cartographer may point you toward another distant site, but unfold it while you are in the right dimension.
Pack for the return trip
- Bring a pick, food, pearls, and several stacks of blocks. Leave some blocks untouched for the return bridge.
- Set a respawn point in the Overworld before entering. A bed in the End explodes.
- Mark each turn between an outer gateway and your destination. On layered terrain, the nearest visible island is not always the safest next step.
