Work Orders

Collector

A copper golem that picks ripe berries, cocoa, melons, amethyst, cane, cactus and bamboo, empties the furnaces you enrol, and banks it all in one chest.

A Collector is the copper golem for the harvests the Farmhand leaves alone. Hand one a Collector Work Order, tap a chest as its bank, and it picks whatever is ripe within 8 blocks — sweet berries, glow berries, cocoa, melons and pumpkins, amethyst, sugar cane, cactus and bamboo — and walks it all to that chest. Tap a furnace or two during setup and it empties their output as well. Unlike the Farmhand it banks what it picks, and unlike the Janitor it only picks up the kinds of produce it collects.

The recipe

Paper
Collector Work Order — 5 copper, paper, and a bundle.

How to use it

The Collector binds the other way round from a Courier: the bank comes first, and there's no pickup container at all. Its pickup is the ground around it, plus any furnaces you choose to enrol.

  1. Craft the Collector Work Order.— copper frame + paper + bundle
  2. Stand the golem among the plants you want picked, then right-click it holding the Work Order.— the slip is consumed; a ✦ Collector nameplate appears
  3. Tap a chest or barrel — that's its bank.— a furnace or brewing stand is refused: the harvest would cook or jam
  4. Optional: tap each furnace, smoker, or blast furnace it should empty.— each tap enrols one; it never touches a furnace you didn't tap
  5. Right-click the golem with an empty hand to finish.— it tells you how many workstations it enrolled

Every tap shares the 30-second bind window that opens when you hand over the slip, and every block you tap must be within 48 blocks of the golem, in the same world. Each tap is saved the moment you make it, so if the window runs out after the bank, the golem goes to work with whatever you managed. Tapping the golem to finish closes the window early, so your next click on a chest opens it instead of binding it.

To change the bank or add a furnace later, hand it another Collector Work Order (without sneaking). That starts over: the old bank and every enrolled furnace are cleared, so tap them all again.

What it collects

ProduceRipe whenWhat stays behind
Sweet Berries Sweet berriesthe bush is fully grownthe bush, set back to regrow
Glow Berries Glow berriesa cave vine is showing berriesthe vine, still growing
Cocoa Beans Cocoathe pod is fully grownthe pod, back to its smallest size
Melon Slice Melons and Pumpkin pumpkinsa stem is still attached to the fruitthe stem, ready to grow another
Amethyst Shard Amethysta full cluster sits on budding amethystthe budding amethyst
Sugar Cane Sugar caneit's two or more blocks tallthe bottom block
Cactusit's two or more blocks tallthe bottom block — any flower on top is picked first
Bambooit's two or more blocks tallthe bottom stalk
Furnace Furnace outputan enrolled furnace, smoker, or blast furnace has something in its result slotthe fuel and the input, untouched

Bamboo comes down the way it does for you: the golem breaks a stalk above the bottom one, everything above it falls, and it sweeps the pieces up. While four or more loose stacks of its produce are lying around, it stops cutting bamboo until it has caught up.

What it leaves alone

  • Decorations. The golem reads ripeness from the plant itself, so decorative blocks never qualify: a melon or pumpkin with no stem attached, an amethyst cluster that isn't growing on budding amethyst, and the bottom block of any cane, cactus, or bamboo.
  • Anything still growing — a bush that isn't full, a vine without berries, amethyst buds.
  • Furnaces you didn't tap, and the fuel and input slots of the ones you did. It only ever takes from the result slot.
  • Wheat, carrots, potatoes, beetroot, and nether wart. Those are the Farmhand's crops.
  • Other drops on the ground. It picks up only the kinds of produce it collects. A dropped sword or a pile of cobblestone is a job for the Janitor.
  • Other containers. It only touches its bank and the furnaces you enrolled.

Glow berries are light. A vine with berries glows; a picked vine goes dark. If your base is lit with glow berries, filter them out (below) before you stand a Collector nearby.

Filtering what it collects

A Collector takes the same filter as a Courier. Sneak and right-click it while holding another Collector Work Order and the editor opens: 7 filter slots, a whitelist/blacklist toggle, and Done. Click items in your own inventory to add their types (ghost copies, nothing is taken from you); close the editor to save.

  • You can name the block or the item: a melon or a melon slice both mean melons.
  • The filter covers furnace output too. Whitelist only sweet berries and an enrolled furnace's iron ingots stay where they are until you add iron ingots to the list.
  • When the only ripe things in range are ones the filter excludes, the golem's readout says ignoring ripe goods (filter), so you know it's the filter and not the golem.

Sneak first! Clicking a Collector with a Work Order without sneaking re-assigns the job and clears its bank and every enrolled furnace. The full editor walkthrough is on Routes & Filters.

Build idea: the self-emptying furnace

A Stoker keeps a furnace loaded; a Collector keeps it empty.

  1. Stoker: supply chest → furnace. It feeds fuel and ore into the furnace.
  2. Collector: tap an output chest as its bank, then enrol that furnace (and its neighbours, if you run a row).
  3. Ingots walk into the output chest while you're off mining. If nothing is ripe nearby, the Collector simply works the furnaces.

Good to know

  • It searches 8 blocks out in every direction and 4 blocks up or down, so centre it in the patch. The top of a tall bamboo grove or a geode's ceiling may be out of range.
  • It needs to reach the top of a cactus to harvest it. Breaking one lower down would drop the pieces onto the cactus below and destroy them, so a column it can't top out is left alone.
  • Something it can't reach — a cluster high on a geode wall, fruit behind glass — gets skipped for about five minutes while it works on everything else.
  • If the bank fills up, the golem holds what it picked and waits, and its readout shows drop-off full until you make room. It never dumps the load into a furnace.
  • Break the bank and the golem shows needs a route; hand it a new Collector Work Order. Break an enrolled furnace and it just drops that furnace from its rounds.
  • It works only while a player is within 64 blocks of the golem or its bank. Standing near an enrolled furnace alone does not wake it.
  • It never slows as it oxidises, but a fully oxidised Collector freezes (and glows so you can find it). Wax it with Honeycomb honeycomb the day you hire it. See Golem Care.
  • The Work Order is consumed on assignment.
