Display cases & decor

A diamond in a chest is safe, but nobody can see it. Display cases and hanging signs give your finds a place in the room. Plant pots and decorated lily pads finish the edges. See gardening for the plants and trees behind the display.

Craft and use a display case

At a crafting table, put one glass in the center and four sticks directly above, below, left, and right of it. The result is a Display Case, shown as a named glow item frame. Place it on top of a block, then right-click the case while holding the item you want to show. Right-click with another item to swap it; right-click with an empty hand to take the displayed item back. Breaking the case also returns its contents.

Sneak and right-click with an empty hand to change how the item is shown. Sneak and right-click while holding a dye to color the glass, or use a water bucket to clear the color. The case uses a single displayed item, which makes it a showcase rather than a chest.

Put items on hanging signs

Place a hanging sign, then attach an item frame or glow item frame to it. Right-click the frame with an item to show that item on the sign. Right-click with an empty hand to remove the frame and return the item. A glow frame makes the displayed item easier to see in a dim room.

Sneak and right-click the frame with honeycomb to lock the display. While locked, ordinary clicks will not change the item. Sneak and right-click with an axe to unlock it.

The sign keeps its usual text, while the added item display works well for a shop marker or a room label; it does not add new text formatting.

Add plants around the display

Use a stonecutter on a flower pot to choose from colored, terracotta, glass, basket, barrel, and other pot styles. These pots can show plants that a plain flower pot cannot hold, including tall flowers, leaves, vines, coral, and crops. The gardening guide has the full method and plant groups.

For a pond, place a lily pad and add a candle, lantern, torch, coral fan, cactus flower, or spore blossom on top. Lit candles, lanterns, and torches give light, while a lily pad remains a lily pad under the decoration.

Pick a painting and read a bookshelf

Place a painting where you can build, then right-click it to choose its picture. Scroll to the one you want and right-click again to keep it. This changes the art on the wall without breaking and replacing the painting.

Right-click an ordinary bookshelf with an empty hand to read a short line from its collection of texts. Hold a block instead if you want to work on the bookshelf or the wall behind it; the reading action stays out of the way while you build.
