Cooking stations

How to craft, place and use every kitchen station, from the Cooking Pot and Mixing Bowl to the Distiller, Basin, Wine Rack and Faucet.

Every dish in the kitchen comes out of a station. The Cooking Pot and Stove cook most of the menu, the Mixing Bowl and Cutting Board turn raw food into ingredients, and the Distiller and Basin make beer and wine. This page shows how to craft each station, where it goes and how to work it. For what to put in, see the recipes and the wines.

Before you build

Stations are blocks, so you need building rights where you put them. Inside the spawn area, x and z from -200 to 200, only members can build. Set up your kitchen at home, or in the market, where anyone can build. Region protection has the exact borders.

Most stations stand on the floor and need a block under them. Take that block away and the station drops as an item. The Mixing Bowl and Cutting Board can also rest on a bottom slab, a closed trapdoor or a carpet, and they sink down to sit on it. The Faucet hangs on a wall and needs a block behind it.

To pick a station back up, hit it three times within three seconds and it drops as an item. The Cooking Pot, Stove, Witch Cauldron and Distiller are the exception: mine them with a pickaxe, like a hopper, and anything inside drops with them.

The recipes show up in your recipe book as you go. Craft The Craft of Cooking, a book and wheat, and keep it with you: the Cooking Pot, Mixing Bowl, Cutting Board and Faucet appear. Owning a Cooking Pot adds the Stove. The Distiller appears once you find the Brewer's Digest, and owning a Distiller adds the Basin and Wine Rack. The Witch Cauldron never appears, so lay it out by hand from its grid.

On Bedrock, these recipes may not show in the recipe book. Lay the items out by hand in the grid and the result appears.

Cook

Cooking Pot

Cooking Pot
Cooking Pot: a cauldron and a campfire, any arrangement

The Cooking Pot cooks most of the dishes in the kitchen. It needs no fire under it, because the flame is part of the pot.

  1. Right-click the pot to open its five slots.
  2. Put in what the recipe lists, one kind of ingredient per slot.— up to five kinds; an extra kind of item means no match
  3. Wait a few seconds.— the dish pops out on top of the pot

The pot starts on its own as soon as its slots match a recipe. It takes one of each ingredient per dish and keeps cooking while every ingredient is still in its slot, so a stack of each cooks a whole batch.

For water, use a Water Bucket water bucket, a water bottle or a Water Pail. The bucket and the bottle come back empty, and the pail loses one bottle's worth. Milk can be a Milk Bottle, a milk bucket or a Milk Pail. The Pail is the easy way to keep both on hand.

A hopper next to the pot can't pull items out of it. Mine the pot with a pickaxe to move it; you get the Cooking Pot back and its contents drop.

The pot also makes a few things you don't eat: the Foodie Book, the Tortilla Sombrero and new music discs. They're on Kitchen tools & decor.

Stove

Stove
Stove: 3 copper ingots, 5 iron ingots and a smoker

The Stove is a Cooking Pot with a pan on top. It cooks every Cooking Pot recipe the same way, and the finished dish slides out the front. Its recipe appears in your recipe book once you own a Cooking Pot.

Never put a TNT in a Stove by itself unless you want its pan. The stove bangs and smokes, breaks nothing, and throws its pan out as a Pan you can wear or swing. From then on the stove is named Stove?, and the pan can't go back on. The Pan has the details.

Witch Cauldron

Witch Cauldron
Witch Cauldron: a carved pumpkin, a spider eye, rotten flesh, a cauldron and a campfire

The Witch Cauldron works like the Cooking Pot. It's also the only station that turns the Scarecrow's Hymn disc into the Trick or Treat disc; see music discs.

Its recipe never shows in the recipe book, on Java or Bedrock. Lay it out by hand at a crafting table: a carved pumpkin, a spider eye and rotten flesh across the top, a cauldron in the center, and a campfire under the cauldron.

Prepare

Mixing Bowl

Mixing Bowl
Mixing Bowl: 5 planks of any kind and a wooden shovel

The Mixing Bowl makes Dough, Butter, Cooking Oil, ice cream and a handful of dishes that need no cooking. It holds up to four items and needs no heat.

  1. Right-click the bowl with an ingredient.— one item goes in per click, up to four
  2. Repeat until everything the recipe lists is in the bowl.
  3. Right-click the bowl with an empty hand to mix.— half a second later the result appears at the bowl

If the items don't make a recipe, they stay in the bowl. Left-click takes out the last item you added, and sneaking while you right-click hands everything back.

To make the same thing again, sneak and right-click the empty bowl. It takes the same ingredients from your inventory and mixes them, as long as you carry them.

Empty the bowl before you pick it up, then hit it three times within three seconds.

Three rotten flesh and a hay bale in the bowl make a Hay Brain, which turns a placed Scarecrow into a hostile mob. Read Hay Brain before you mix one.

Cutting Board

Cutting Board
Cutting Board: two stripped logs or stems side by side

Any stripped log or stem works, and the two don't have to match. Plain logs and bamboo don't. The Cutting Board turns raw meat, fish and a few plants into the pieces recipes ask for, and it needs a knife.

  1. Right-click the board with the item you want to cut.— the board holds one item at a time
  2. Right-click the board with a knife in your main hand.— each cut uses one point of the knife's durability

It's quicker to hold the knife in your main hand and the food in your off hand. The first right-click lays the food on the board, and the next one cuts it.

Right-click with an empty hand, or left-click, to take an item back off the board. Watch the knife: if the board is empty and your off hand is too, a right-click with the knife puts the knife itself on the board.

Put on the boardYou get
Raw Beef2 Beef Cutlets
Raw Chicken2 Chicken Cutlets
Raw Porkchop2 Pork Cutlets
Raw Mutton2 Mutton Cutlets
Raw Rabbit2 Rabbit Cutlets
Raw Cod2 Cod Fillets
Raw Salmon2 Salmon Fillets
Acacia Log2 Cinnamon, and the log comes back stripped
Hanging Roots1 Ginger
Glow Berries2 Glimmernut
Dough1 Noodles

Clear the board, then hit it three times within three seconds to pick it up.

Distil

Distiller

Distiller
Distiller: 3 iron ingots, a compass, a block of copper (waxed works too) and a barrel

The Distiller makes beer and wine. Its recipe appears in your recipe book once you find the Brewer's Digest in a shipwreck. Until then, you can lay it out by hand.

  1. Place the Distiller.
  2. Place a Basin right beside it, level with it or half a block lower.— the Distiller pours into the Basin and won't start without one
  3. Right-click the Distiller and put in water and the ingredients for one drink.

It runs on its own: 15 seconds for Beer and Ginger Beer, 20 minutes for every wine. Each finished batch adds one bottle's worth to the Basin, and the Distiller keeps going while ingredients remain and the Basin has room. If nothing starts, move the Basin to another side of the Distiller.

Mine the Distiller with a pickaxe to move it. Every drink, what goes in it and how ageing works: Wines.

Basin

Basin
Basin: 5 iron ingots and 2 planks of any kind

The Basin catches what the Distiller makes. It holds three bottles' worth of one drink, and it takes a different drink only once it's empty. It has no menu.

Place it on the floor beside the Distiller, with a block under it. Right-click it with a glass bottle to fill one bottle. The bottle goes to your inventory, or drops at your feet if your inventory is full.

Hit it three times within three seconds to pick it up. Anything still inside is lost, so bottle it first.

A Basin holding Booze Wine never gives you a bottle. Right-click it with a glass bottle and a hostile mob called Booze appears instead. Read Wines before you make it.

Wine Rack

Wine Rack
Wine Rack: 6 planks of any kind and 3 fences

The Wine Rack stores and shows off four bottles of wine. Wine ages from the day it's bottled wherever you keep it, so the rack is for display and storage, not faster ageing.

Right-click the rack with a bottle of wine in your main hand to slot it in. Right-click a filled slot with an empty hand to take that bottle out. Only wine goes in. Break the rack and it drops with every bottle in it.

A Spirit Sprite used at a rack ages the wine in it on the spot.

Water

Faucet

Faucet
Faucet: a copper ingot, 3 iron ingots and a water bucket

The Faucet fills a cauldron or a placed Pail with water for cooking.

  1. Place the Faucet on a wall.— it needs a block behind it
  2. Put a cauldron or a placed Pail in the space right under it.
  3. Right-click the Faucet to turn it on.— it adds one cauldron level, or four bottles' worth to a Pail, about every three quarters of a second

It turns itself off when the cauldron or Pail is full. Right-click it again to stop it early. Fill your buckets and bottles from the cauldron as usual.

Hit it three times within three seconds to pick it up.
