Furniture & the carpenter bench
Craft a Carpenter Bench, turn wood, wool, iron and lanterns into chairs, tables, lamps and more, and place, sit on and recolor them.
Every chair, table, cabinet and lamp on this page comes out of one block, the Carpenter Bench. You craft the bench once, put wood, wool, iron or a lantern in it, and take out the pieces you want, one material each. Seats hold a player, the Cabinet holds as much as a chest, the Fridge fills your buckets and the lamps stay lit. For display cases, hanging signs and plant pots, see Display cases & decor.
Craft the Carpenter Bench
Lay the items out at a crafting table: the axe and the shears side by side on top, and four planks in two rows below them. The grid in your inventory is too small for it. Any planks work, mixed woods included. The craft uses up the axe and the shears along with the planks, so a stone axe is the thrifty choice.
The recipe book never shows this recipe, because nothing unlocks it. Lay the items out by hand and the bench appears in the result slot.
Hold the bench and place it like a block. It becomes a workbench with a chest built in, facing you. To move it, break it: you get the Carpenter Bench back, and any materials still inside come out with it.
Make furniture
The bench opens like a chest. The first two slots of the middle row take your materials, and the gray panes around them are only the frame. The rest of the chest is the menu, and it fills with every piece you can make from what you put in.
- Right-click the bench to open it.
- Put your main material in the first slot of the middle row.— wood, an iron block, an iron ingot or a lantern
- For cushioned pieces and curtains, put wool in the slot beside it.— wood first, then wool
- Take a piece out of the menu to make it.— the bench uses one material and offers the piece again
Put the wood in before the wool. If you shift-click, shift-click the wood first, since it lands in the first slot. If the menu stays empty, take both materials out and start again with the wood.
Any color of wool works. The piece always comes out white, and you dye it once it's placed.
Take your leftover materials out when you're done. Once nobody is standing near the bench, it drops whatever is left in it at the feet of the nearest player, who may not be you.
What you put in decides what the menu offers:
| Put in | You can take |
|---|---|
| Planks, a log, a stripped log, wood or stripped wood of one kind (bamboo: planks, a block of bamboo or a stripped block of bamboo; crimson and warped: planks, a stem, a stripped stem, hyphae or stripped hyphae) | Stool, Chair, Park Bench, Table, Low Table, Pedestal Table, Accent Table, Cabinet, Bedside Cabinet, Throne Chair, Wall Rack: 1 wood per piece |
| That wood plus any wool in the other slot | Everything above, plus Armchair, Wooled Throne Chair and Sofa (1 wood and 1 wool each), Curtain and Store Curtain (1 wool each) |
| Any wool alone | Curtain, Store Curtain: 1 wool per piece |
| An iron block | Fridge, Mailbox: 1 iron block per piece |
| An iron ingot | Street Lamp Pole: 1 iron ingot per piece |
| A lantern or a soul lantern | Street Lamp, Table Lamp: 1 lantern per piece |
| A lantern with an iron ingot in the other slot | Street Lamp, Table Lamp, and Street Lamp Pole (the pole uses only the ingot) |
Every piece
Thirteen pieces come in all 12 woods, and nine more, the bench included, have one look each. A seat holds one player. A piece marked solid fills its block, so you can't walk through it.
Pieces made in all 12 woods
Each piece is named with its wood first, for example "Birch Stool". The Wooled Throne Chair puts the wood in the middle: "Wooled Birch Throne Chair".
| Piece | What it does |
|---|---|
| Stool | One seat |
| Chair | One seat |
| Armchair | One seat; the cushion takes dye |
| Park Bench | One seat; neighboring benches join up |
| Throne Chair | One seat |
| Wooled Throne Chair | One seat; the carpet and candles take dye |
| Table | Decoration; solid, and joins neighboring tables |
| Low Table | Decoration; joins neighboring tables |
| Pedestal Table | Decoration; solid |
| Accent Table | Decoration; solid, and joins neighboring tables |
| Cabinet | Storage: opens like a chest, 27 slots |
| Bedside Cabinet | Decoration; solid |
| Wall Rack | Decoration for a wall or the floor |

Fixed pieces
| Piece | Made from | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Carpenter Bench | An axe, shears and 4 planks at a crafting table | The crafting station for every other piece |
| Sofa | 1 wood and 1 wool at the bench | One seat; neighboring sofas join up; takes dye |
| Curtain | 1 wool at the bench | Opens and closes; takes dye |
| Store Curtain | 1 wool at the bench | Cycles half open, open and closed; takes dye |
| Street Lamp | 1 lantern or soul lantern at the bench | A lamp that is always lit |
| Table Lamp | 1 lantern or soul lantern at the bench | A dimmer lamp that is always lit |
| Street Lamp Pole | 1 iron ingot at the bench | A decorative iron pole |
| Fridge | 1 iron block at the bench | Right-click with an empty bucket for a water bucket, with a glass bottle for a water bottle, or with a water bucket for 1 ice and an empty bucket back |
| Mailbox | 1 iron block at the bench | Right-click holding an item to put it in; right-click with an empty hand to take one stack back, last in first out. Anyone can empty it |
Place, sit and use
Hold a piece and place it like a block. It turns to match the way you're facing, so stand where you want it to look from. To turn it another way, break it and place it again.
Right-click a Stool, Chair, Armchair, Park Bench, Throne Chair, Wooled Throne Chair or Sofa to sit down. Sneak to stand up.
Sneak and right-click a seat with an empty hand and the action bar shows Mob Sit : ON. While it's on, a mob that comes up to the seat sits in it. Do the same again to switch it off.
The Cabinet opens like any chest. The Fridge and the Mailbox work with a right-click while you hold the item, as the table above lists. Since anyone can empty a Mailbox, use it for notes and gifts rather than storage. The lamps give light day and night and have no switch.
Furniture and the bench are blocks you place, so they follow the same rules as any build. In the spawn area (x and z from -200 to 200) only members can build, so set up your bench at home or in the market, where anyone can build. The rules for both areas are on Region protection.
Change and remove furniture
Sneak and right-click a placed piece while you hold one of these:
| Hold | What changes |
|---|---|
| Nothing | A Curtain opens or closes. A Store Curtain moves to half open, open, then closed |
| An axe | The wood turns into stripped wood, once per piece. A wooden, stone, iron, golden, diamond or netherite axe works; a copper axe doesn't |
| Any dye | The cushion, carpet or cloth takes that color on a Sofa, Armchair, Wooled Throne Chair, Curtain or Store Curtain. The dye stays in your hand |
| A log, stem, wood or hyphae, stripped or not, or a block of bamboo | The piece switches to that wood |
Wool doesn't recolor a piece, so use a dye. Planks don't change the wood, so use a log.
Punch a piece to pick it up. It drops as an item you can place again, and it comes back plain: any dye or stripping is gone. Breaking a Cabinet spills what's inside it, and breaking a Mailbox drops its mail.
Pale pieces don't drop back, for now. Break a Pale piece and it's gone, with nothing to pick up. The same goes for a piece you switched to pale oak with a log. Place Pale furniture only where you mean to keep it.
On Bedrock
Furniture shows on Bedrock with the textures the server sends when you join, and seats work the same: sit down, then sneak to stand up. The bench recipe may not show in the Bedrock recipe book, so lay the items out by hand at a crafting table and the bench appears in the result slot.
