Sunday Market
The kitchen

The kitchen

Grow seven new crops, build cooking stations and make more than 100 dishes and drinks, from a wedge of cheese to a bottle of aged wine.

The kitchen turns the food you farm into meals. Seven new crops grow beside your wheat, a set of stations turns them into more than 100 dishes, and a Distiller makes beer and wines whose effects grow with age. It all runs on crafting and placing blocks, with no commands to learn.

Furniture from the Carpenter Bench arrived in the same update and uses the same textures.

Start cooking

  1. Accept the Sunday Market textures when you join.— on Java the prompt reads Required for crops, cooking and furniture; Bedrock downloads them on its own
  2. Craft The Craft of Cooking from a Book and Wheat, in any arrangement.— once you carry it, the Cooking Pot, Mixing Bowl, Cutting Board and Faucet appear in your recipe book
  3. Break grass for your first seeds.— Tomato, Corn, Lettuce and Rice Seeds drop in place of Wheat Seeds about half the time
  4. Craft a Cooking Pot from a cauldron and a campfire, in any arrangement, and place it.
  5. Right-click the pot, put a Milk Bucket in it and wait a few seconds.— a Cheese pops out on top, and the empty bucket comes back

On Bedrock, these recipes may not show in the recipe book. Lay the items out by hand in the grid and the result appears.

The pot needs no fire or fuel. It cooks when its slots hold exactly the kinds of item a recipe lists. One extra kind of item stops it, while extra copies of a listed item let it cook the same dish again.

Next, plant your seeds. The crops page covers planting and harvesting each one. When your corn comes in, Corn and a Water Bottle in the pot make a Tortilla, the base for tacos, burritos and quesadillas.

Where to set up

Stations, crops and furniture are all blocks, so the usual building rules apply. In the spawn area, from -200 to 200 on both x and z, only members can build. Set up your kitchen at home, or in the market, where anyone can build. See region protection for where each rule applies.

The cookbook

The Craft of Cooking is your guide to every dish. Right-click it to read it.

On Java it opens as a book, with sections for Staples, Drinks & Snacks, Light Dishes, Hearty Dishes, Feasts and Desserts, plus a page of seeds. Each page stays hidden until you've held that item. The first time a dish, ingredient or seed lands in your inventory, its page fills in and a notice pops up. You can also set the book on a lectern and read it there.

On Bedrock it opens as a menu with chapters: Front, Staples, Drinks & Snacks, Light Dishes, Hearty Dishes, Feasts and Desserts, with buttons to turn the page. The recipe pages stay locked in that menu, so use Kitchen recipes here, which lists every dish.

The cookbook covers food only. Station recipes are on Cooking stations, and drinks from the Distiller are on Wines & the distiller. Two more books, the Foodie Book and Brewer's Digest, open only on Java, so the wiki lists everything they hold.

Kitchen, tavern or the sign-built pot?

Three things on this server cook or brew, and they don't share recipes.

  • The kitchen is this section: crafted stations such as the Cooking Pot, Mixing Bowl, Cutting Board and Distiller, the seven new crops, and the dishes and wines they make.
  • The tavern brews drinks in a water cauldron over heat, then in a brewing stand and a barrel. A few tavern drinks share a name with kitchen ones, such as Coffee, Iced Coffee, Hot Chocolate and Apple Cider. They are different items, so follow the recipe for the system you're using.
  • The sign-built cooking pot is netherrack, fire and a chest with a [Cook] sign. It cooks the raw food in its chest, fueled by coal, and makes none of the kitchen's dishes.
