Crops & ingredients

Where to find seeds for the seven new crops, how to plant and harvest each one, and how to make the prepared ingredients that kitchen recipes call for.

The kitchen adds seven crops: Tomato, Corn, Lettuce, Rice, Chili Pepper, Grapes and Coffee. Four of them come from the grass at your feet. The other three wait in the chests of a nether fortress, a shipwreck and a jungle temple. This page covers the first seeds, how each crop grows and pays out, and the ingredients you prepare before you cook.

The ripe harvest is what a punch or a scythe gives. A right-click gives the crop without seeds and leaves the plant growing. Coffee Cherries are both the crop and the seed.

Find your first seeds

Grass

Break short grass or tall grass. Whenever it would drop Wheat Seeds, there's a 1 in 2 chance you get Tomato, Corn, Lettuce or Rice Seeds instead, each as likely as the others.

Structure chests

The other three crops turn up in structure chests, added the first time a chest is opened. A chest someone has already looted won't have them. Look straight at the chest as you open it.

  • A nether fortress chest gets 1 to 3 Chili Pepper Seeds.
  • A shipwreck's supply chest, the one stocked with food and supplies rather than maps or treasure, gets up to 4 Grape Seeds. Some get none.
  • A jungle temple chest gets 1 to 3 Coffee Cherries.

Wandering traders

A wandering trader can offer Coffee Cherries, one for 15 emeralds.

More seeds from the composter

Once you've grown a crop, put it in a composter that isn't full. Half the time you also get one seed of that crop back. This works for Tomato, Corn, Lettuce, Rice, Chili Pepper and Grapes, but not Coffee Cherries.

Farmers don't sell these seeds, but they buy the crops. A Novice farmer may take Tomato, Corn or Rice at 12 for an emerald, or Lettuce at 20 for an emerald. An Apprentice farmer may take Chili Pepper, Grapes or Coffee Cherries at 10 for an emerald. Any one farmer offers only some of these trades.

Plant, grow and harvest

Planting

Six of the crops grow on farmland. Hold the seeds, look at a block of farmland within reach and hold right-click. The seed plants on top of it. Keep the space above each crop empty, because a block there breaks most of them.

Rice grows in water. Find plain dirt (not grass or farmland) with one block of still water on top and open air above the water, like a pond one block deep. Hold Rice Seeds and hold right-click while aiming at the dirt through the water. The plant holds that water in place. Drain it and the rice breaks; break the rice and the water comes back.

Growing

Crops grow on their own, one step at a time. Treat the field the way you would a wheat field, with water near the farmland and plenty of light.

Bone meal moves a crop 2 to 5 steps toward ripe. Lettuce has only 3 steps, so bone meal moves it one step, and 1 use in 4 does nothing. Bone meal on a ripe Tomato, Grape or Chili Pepper plant harvests it instead, and the bone meal isn't used. On ripe Corn, Lettuce or Rice it does nothing.

Harvesting

  • Right-click a ripe Tomato, Grape or Chili Pepper plant. You get 2 to 3 of the crop and no seeds. The plant drops back two steps and grows again, so you never replant it.
  • Punch any crop to break it. A ripe crop gives its full harvest, seeds included. An unripe one gives back one seed. Corn, Lettuce and Rice harvest only by punching or with a scythe.
  • Scythe: right-click a ripe crop with a scythe in either hand. It harvests every ripe crop in the 3x3 around it, seeds included, and replants each one for you. Aim at the kitchen crop itself. Holding right-click with a scythe also works on vanilla crops. See scythes.

You can eat Tomato, Corn, Lettuce, Rice, Chili Pepper and Grapes raw, but each fills only 1 hunger. They're worth more in a recipe.

The seven crops

Tomato

Plant on farmland and right-click when ripe for 2 to 3 Tomatoes. Punch it or use a scythe when you also want 1 to 4 Tomato Seeds.

About 1 tomato harvest in 50 also gives a Rotten Tomato, and about 1 in 500 a Very Rotten Tomato. Both can be thrown. A Very Rotten Tomato bursts where it lands and hurts everything within 3 blocks, so throw it well clear of yourself.

Tomato goes into Salsa, Tomato Soup, Pizza, Spaghetti, Lasagna, Ratatouille, the BLT, the Hamburger and Cheeseburger, the Taco and Spring Salad, among others. It also counts as any Vegetable.

Corn

Plant on farmland. Punch it or use a scythe for 3 to 5 Corn and 1 to 4 Corn Seeds. Punching removes the plant, so put a seed back; the scythe replants for you.

Corn goes into Cornbread and the Tortilla, and counts as any Vegetable. Keep some Corn Seeds out of the field: they are an ingredient too. Corn Seeds with Butter and Cooking Oil make Popcorn, and Corn Seeds with Sugar make Candy Corn. Trail Mix takes any seed.

Lettuce

Plant on farmland. It ripens in 3 steps. Punch it or use a scythe for 1 Lettuce and 1 to 4 Lettuce Seeds.

Lettuce goes into the BLT, Hamburger, Cheeseburger, Taco, Gyro, Lettuce Wrap, Chicken Fillet Roll and Spring Salad, and counts as any Vegetable.

Rice

Plant in water, as described under Planting. Punch it or use a scythe for 3 to 5 Rice and 1 to 3 Rice Seeds.

Rice goes into Egg Fried Rice, Mushroom Risotto, Sushi, Bibimbap, the Burrito, Butter Chicken, Ginger Chicken and the Bento Box. It does not count as a Vegetable.

Chili Pepper

Find the first seeds in nether fortress chests, then plant on farmland. Right-click when ripe for 2 to 3 Chili Peppers. Punch it or use a scythe when you also want 1 to 4 seeds.

Chili Pepper goes into Salsa, Chili, the Sloppy Joe, Buffalo Wings, Butter Chicken, Ginger Chicken, Chicken Satay, Pad Thai and the Infernal Cupcake, and with a music disc it makes another music disc. It counts as any Vegetable.

Grapes

Find the first seeds in shipwreck supply chests, then plant on farmland. Right-click when ripe for 2 to 3 Grapes. Punch it or use a scythe when you also want 1 to 4 Grape Seeds.

The Cooking Pot dries Grapes into Raisins. At the Distiller they make Grape Wine, Fine Wine and Mulled Wine, and they count as any Fruit, which other wines call for. See Wines & the distiller.

Coffee

Find the first Coffee Cherries in jungle temple chests or from a wandering trader, then plant them on farmland. Punch the ripe bush or use a scythe for 1 to 4 Coffee Cherries, and plant one back.

The Cooking Pot roasts Coffee Cherries into Coffee Beans. Coffee Beans and any water make Coffee, which gives Speed and Haste for 30 seconds. Coffee in turn goes into Iced Coffee and the Pumpkin Latte.

See Kitchen recipes for every dish these crops make.

Prepared ingredients

Many recipes call for something you make first. You cut it on the Cutting Board, stir it in the Mixing Bowl, or cook it in the Cooking Pot. For those three stations, the grid below shows what goes in, not a crafting-table layout.

At the crafting table

On Bedrock, these recipes may not show in the recipe book. Lay the items out by hand in the grid and the result appears.

Milk Bottle
×8
Milk Bottle: a Milk Bucket and 8 Glass Bottles, any arrangement. Makes 8.
Pail
Pail: 7 copper ingots and a bucket. Hold right-click on a cow with it to collect 8 bottles of milk at a time.

A Pail holds up to 32 bottles of milk or water, and a Milk Pail or Water Pail works as the milk or water in any recipe. See Pail.

On the Cutting Board

Right-click the board with the item to set it down, then right-click it with a knife to cut. Any knife works, and a Wooden Knife (a stick and any planks) is the cheapest. Each cut uses 1 point of the knife's durability. See knives.

Cinnamon
×2
Cinnamon (Cutting Board): an Acacia Log gives 2 Cinnamon and comes back as a Stripped Acacia Log.
Ginger
Ginger (Cutting Board): Hanging Roots give 1 Ginger.
Glimmernut
×2
Glimmernut (Cutting Board): Glow Berries give 2 Glimmernut.
Beef Cutlets
×2
Beef Cutlets (Cutting Board): Raw Beef gives 2.
Chicken Cutlets
×2
Chicken Cutlets (Cutting Board): Raw Chicken gives 2.
Mutton Cutlets
×2
Mutton Cutlets (Cutting Board): Raw Mutton gives 2.
Pork Cutlets
×2
Pork Cutlets (Cutting Board): Raw Porkchop gives 2.
Rabbit Cutlets
×2
Rabbit Cutlets (Cutting Board): Raw Rabbit gives 2.
Cod Fillets
×2
Cod Fillets (Cutting Board): Raw Cod gives 2.
Salmon Fillets
×2
Salmon Fillets (Cutting Board): Raw Salmon gives 2.
Noodles
Noodles (Cutting Board): one Dough, not plain wheat.

In the Mixing Bowl

Right-click the bowl with an item to drop one in, up to 4 items. Then right-click it with an empty hand to mix. Everything in the bowl counts toward the recipe, so add exactly what it lists.

Dough
Dough (Mixing Bowl): one Wheat and one water (a Water Bottle, Water Bucket or Water Pail). The empty bottle or bucket comes back.
Dough
×2
Dough from an egg (Mixing Bowl): one Wheat and one egg of any kind. Makes 2.
Butter
Butter (Mixing Bowl): one milk (a Milk Bottle, Milk Bucket or Milk Pail).
Cooking Oil
Cooking Oil (Mixing Bowl): a Glass Bottle and a Sunflower.
Glimmernut Butter
Glimmernut Butter (Mixing Bowl): one Glimmernut.

In the Cooking Pot

Right-click the pot to open its five slots, put the ingredients in and wait a few seconds. The result pops out on top. Fill a slot with a stack and the pot keeps cooking until it runs out.

Cheese
Cheese (Cooking Pot): one milk (a Milk Bottle, Milk Bucket or Milk Pail).
Coffee Beans
Coffee Beans (Cooking Pot): Coffee Cherries.
Raisins
Raisins (Cooking Pot): Grapes.
Bread
Bread (Cooking Pot): one Dough. The result is ordinary bread.

Vanilla ingredients worth stocking

Most recipes use everyday items like wheat, sugar, eggs and milk. These take a trip.

Ingredient groups

Many recipes don't ask for one exact item. A recipe that calls for any Milk takes a Milk Bottle, a Milk Bucket or a Milk Pail. Any Meat takes raw meat or the cutlets made from it, and any Vegetable takes Tomato, Corn, Lettuce, Chili Pepper and several vanilla vegetables. The full list of groups and what counts in each is on Kitchen recipes.

Vanilla crops get a new look

With the Sunday Market textures, wheat, carrots, potatoes, beetroots, sugar cane and other vanilla crops get new looks. Only the look changes; they grow and drop as before.

A cartographer may offer a Fizz Hut Map for emeralds and a compass. In this world it leads nowhere: the huts it searches for appear only in land generated after this update, and all the land inside the world border was generated before it. Keep your emeralds.
