Nether expeditions

Find the Nether's new biomes, ruins, hostile mobs, rare equipment, and a dangerous altar.

A safe portal room is only the start of a Nether trip. Beyond it are eight strange regions, from pale quartz ground to ash and poisonous waste, with forts and labs built among them. Mark your portal before you leave it, then carry spare blocks and fire resistance. You cannot set a bed here.

Pick a route through the wastes

RegionWhat stands outWatch for
Quartz flatsPale ground, frozen lava seas, quartz towers, and a kitchenA fall can still end a trip; towers hold imprisoned ghastlings.
Infernal dunesHot red sand, altars, and pipelinesDesert blazes behave differently from ordinary blazes, and pipeline sentries fire lightning.
Toxic heapWaste around ruined labs and Nether reactorsToxic slimes poison at close range; a piece of protective clothing can block that poison.
Ash barrensA bleak approach to the Forbidden CastleThe castle is held by piglins and has guarded rooms.
Withered forestAn old battleground haunted by spiritsChain armor can dispel nearby spirits.
Volcanic deltasBroken heights and exposed rockWatch your footing; ancient debris can appear high in the terrain.
Weeping valley and inverted forestUnusual forest shapes and steep routesKeep a marked path back to your portal.

A biome name tells you the landscape, not a promise that its landmark is nearby. Travel along solid ground where you can, and save a stack of blocks for the return crossing.

Forts, villages, and hidden rooms

The rebuilt Nether fortress still serves the familiar blaze-rod hunt, but its halls take more time to clear. Other finds include piglin villages, abandoned towers, quartz kitchens, pipelines, ruined labs, Nether reactors, the Illagers' Sanctum, and the Forbidden Castle. There are also keeps, ports, piglin camps, towers, and odd outposts away from the main paths.

Look for a Piglin Donjon or outstation if you want a defended vault, and a Sealing Halls complex if you are ready to hunt ghasts. Its boss vault uses a key earned through that hunt. Nether keeps can even shelter powder snow; bring a safe way to cross a cold room. A chart bought from a tavern cartographer may help point toward a distant landmark once unfolded in the Nether.

A quartz tower holds ghastlings. Feed one a fire charge to toggle whether it follows you. In a quartz kitchen, search beyond the obvious rooms for a hidden store. Pipelines hold sentries and their own concealed treasure. A Nether reactor has a distinct treasure cache that can contain a Radiation Shield; a ruined lab and a castle call for more careful room-by-room searching.

The Sanctum has a guarded vault. Defeating its guards lifts the Mining Fatigue that protects it, so a pickaxe alone will not get you through quickly. In the Forbidden Castle, piglin guards include scouts and alchemists. Alchemists' stores can hold Unstable Powder, while cold stores can hold a Chilling Blade.

Mobs and what they leave behind

EncounterWhat to know
Desert blazeNative to the dunes; its drops vary with light, so a fight near the edge of light and dark can differ from a fight in full light.
Pipeline sentryFires lightning and can drop a Torch of Lunacy, which blinds nearby desert blazes while carried.
Toxic slimePoisons nearby players without protective clothing. Its drops include slime, magma cream, or a poison potion.
Restless spiritHaunts the withered forest. Chain armor can dispel one nearby; defeating one yourself can yield Restless Nature, a seed that can grow a bent Nether tree.
GhastlingA small ghast found near the quartz towers. A fire charge changes whether it follows you.
Castle defendersPiglin guards, scouts, and alchemists defend the castle's inner stores.

Gear to recognize

These are rare finds, not a fixed checklist for every chest. The source of each item matters more than its look.

FindWhere it comes fromWhat it does
Radiation ShieldNether reactor treasureReleases a poison cloud when it blocks a hit.
Protective clothingNether reactor waste storesAny worn piece protects against a toxic slime's close-range poison.
Chilling BladeCastle cold storesSlows and freezes a struck foe.
Unstable PowderCastle alchemists' storesDropping it makes a flash and reveals nearby castle or Sanctum enemies for a time.
Torch of LunacyPipeline sentriesBlinds desert blazes near its carrier.
Restless NatureRestless spiritsGrows a bent tree where it can take root.
Scout's Battle HelmCastle scoutsGives more speed as your health falls.
Scroll of ReturningSanctum illusionistsCarries you from the Nether to the Overworld spawn. It usually crumbles when used.
Cake BatterThe skeleton cook in a quartz kitchenAn odd cake that can give a target hunger or, on a luckier hit, saturation.
Prismatic or Necrotic ShieldReward from the Hovering InfernoThe first fires a ray of light on a block; the second answers a block with a withering burst. Both have a cooldown.
Firestorm or TrailblazerReward from the Hovering InfernoFirestorm turns spectral arrows into a lightning attack. Trailblazer grows stronger as you draw it and leaves fire with spectral arrows.
Infernal FeatherReward from the Hovering InfernoUse it at a smithing table to upgrade elytra into armored Infernal Wings. For plain armored elytra from any chestplate, see Armored elytra.

Castle stores can also hold Miner's Ale for haste, an Elixir of Undying with protective effects, and a Suspicious Brew that mixes strength with nausea and slowness. The Sanctum's stores include potions of Bad Omen and Eternal Glowing, along with a Death Potion that carries a long list of harmful effects. Read the label before drinking. The Sanctum also has four decorative banners to find.

Weapons displayed in the castle

Several castle rooms hold weapons on stands, each with a different use. A Hefty Pickaxe can smash nearby Nether rock as you mine. A Blazing Hatchet burns and throws back close enemies, and turns logs into charcoal when used to break them. Withersbane strikes nearby skeletons, withers, and other undead Nether foes. The Multiplex Crossbow releases a short burst of fiery arrows; the Voltaic Trident calls an electrical burst when it hits or enters water.

The castle can also hold Sentry's Wrath, which turns a spectral arrow into a slower, stronger attack with a cooldown. A sword stand may offer either a Scarlet Dagger, which can heal its wielder in a fight, or a Greatsword of Sacrifice, which damages its wielder on a hit in exchange for heavy damage. Check your health before trying the greatsword.

Sanctum and other rare gear

A Sanctum Guardian can drop Holy Wrath, a crossbow that sends out a spiral of fireballs. Other finds displayed in the Sanctum include Daybreaker, which can drop gold on a kill, and Ragnarok, a bow whose lightning grows stronger the longer it is drawn. Holding Ragnarok drawn too long is dangerous. Defeating a wither in an inverted or warped forest can yield a Warping Witherblade, whose hits can wither a foe.

The altar in the dunes

To call the Hovering Inferno, drop a nether star beside an infernal altar in the dunes. This is a survival fight: the foe has a final spell, and staying alive through it is part of the win. Its reward is drawn from the gear above, so one victory will not hand you the whole set. Bring fire protection, room to move, and a clear route away from the altar before making the offering.

For the route back, see Nether portals. For other structures, use the landmarks atlas.
